The American Express Gold Rewards Card is the most rewarding card currently available in the UK. You earn points on virtually every purchase, which can be exchanged for points on a number of frequent flyer programmes.
Earning American Express Membership Rewards Points
Earning points with your American Express Gold Rewards card is simple. You will earn 1 Membership Rewards point for nearly pound spent plus an additional point on purchases made with airlines or in a foreign currency.
American Express currently offer a sign-up bonus of 20,000 Membership Rewards points when signing up for the card. However, if you use our referral link, you will earn an additional 2,000 Membership Rewards points with your application. To receive your bonus points, you'll need to spend £2,000 on the card within the first 3 months.
The majority of American Express' airline partners operate on a 1:1 redemption ratio, which works in your favour as these points are easy to obtain. 20,000 miles with Virgin Atlantic is enough to book a one way upgrade to Upper Class. Besides Virgin Atlantic, your points can be exchanged for points with the following airline and hotel loyalty schemes:
- British Airways Executive Club
- Emirates Skywards
- Alitalia Points
- Etihad Guest
- Asia Miles
- Delta Skymiles
- Finnair Plus Points
- KLM/Air France Flying Blue
- Iberia Avios
- SAS Eurobonus
- Singapore Airlines Krisflyer
- Virgin Atlantic Flying Club
- Starwood Preferred Guest
- Hilton HHonors
- Club Carlson Gold Points
How Does The Card Work?
The American Express Gold Rewards card is a charge card, meaning that you need to clear the balance in full every month. This also means that the acceptance criteria for the Gold Rewards Card is lower than that of the credit cards offered by American Express, such as the British Airways card. The only formal income criteria is that you must have an annual household income of at least £20,000, subject to a credit check on application.
The card fee of £140 is waived for the first year. Besides the opportunity to earn points, the card also comes with a number of other benefits:
- 2 free airport lounge passes per year.
- 10% discount on Hertz car rentals and complimentary upgrade.
- $75 hotel credit, which can be redeemed at over 350 hotels globally, including Hilton, Intercontinental and Sofitel hotels.
- Access to pre-sales for concerts and film festivals
- Travel and shopping protection
- Access to American Express Cardmember Offers, which will give you discounts at major retailers like Amazon, Argos and Heals.
